It does what it says on the tin February 7, 2010 Ms. K. J. Mcmahon (Hampshire, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I didn't buy my D40 from Amazon, but just wanted to say how highly I rate it.
I am in my second year of a photography degree, and was bought the D40 with 18-55mm lens whilst at college (so I have had the pleasure of using this bit of kit for four years), and haven't looked back.
A lot of people on my course have opted for flashier Canon 5DMII and Nikon D3X, but this model is brilliant for its price tag. It is relatively lightweight, you have a good level of control regarding exposure & choosing whether to have it on 'Manual' or 'Automatic' settings.
What I would say is that the lens you decide to use has a big effect on the quality of your images, which is why I am reluctant to upgrade. I bought a Sigma 70-300mm to accompany my D40, and the sharpness is extremely good.
I will probably upgrade at some point, but don't feel pressured into buying a more expensive model with the hope that it will exceed this. I have printed A3 images with exceptionally good levels of clarity, so 6MP is absolutely fine. Portability is very good, compatible lenses aren't too extortionate if you want to try something new, and it's good for beginners or people with more knowledge.
If anybody can recommend a better or more appropriate model than the D40 please do, but after four years I only feel the need to upgrade as others are; it works perfectly as it did the day it was purchased.
Five stars; recommend very highly if you know somebody who is starting out with photography as I was
Fantastic first DSLR January 6, 2010 soundisoptical (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this camera at the start of my A-level photography course as I was on a tight budget (as students are) and wanted the best value for money I could get.
I have had this camera nearly two years now, and have truely used every last sap of it's strength. I've been featured in Flickr's Blog, have sold photographs at various art events, and can tell you this is a perfect camera for the budding photographer.
The 18-55mm lens is good for close up work, but I'd highly advise getting the 55-200mm lens as I probably use this for general photography more than the standard kit lens. The only thing that lets down the whole kit is the build quality of the lenses - they just don't feel very well made. Saying that, they've caused me no severe problems as yet.
Ignore the amount of megapixels - I can't reitterate enough how much of a marketing ploy this is to consumers. 12 megapixels IS NOT GOOD for the normal consumer using a camera. It just takes up more space on memory cards and hard-drives and takes longer to process. I have printed photographs at A2 size clearly from my Nikon D40. A 12+ MP camera is for pro's - only.
It's been two years and I think I'm finally ready to move on, as the D40 has taught me everything I know about photography, with it's ability to switch from acting like a complete novice camera, to having the interface of a pro DSLR.
Next camera: the D80.

Fantastic camera November 21, 2009 Mr. T. W. Barlow (Leeds, UK) My first DSLR and what an excellent camera! Looks great, feels great and takes brilliant photos. The quality of the photos are far better than anything I have seen before. Really enjoy using it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a DSLR. Took it around India this year, a little cumbersome to lug around but well worth it.
Great camera for a great price! September 11, 2009 Glenn 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought my D40 last March 2009 to further my photography skills. Been a point and shoot user for the last 7 years and shifting to this entry level camera has been a fantastic decision I've made. I spent 2 weeks of thorough research and comparison with Sony Alpha 200, my other choice and obviously ended up with Nikon because of excellent reviews, not to mention its loads of features.
Six months of D40 shooting, I have experienced its flexibility and quality of images. I'm proud to have owned one of the most popular products of Nikon.
