ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE March 12, 2010 DRC (uk) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm new to this series of games ... and I don't think I'll bother in future. The download of this game is an absolute nightmare.
The online activation code process is a joke. The server repeatedly said my 25 digit activation code was not valid. I eventually went to the help page, which said things like ...if there is an O in the code try using a D or a Q instead ... or if the is a 1 try using a capital I instead !!!! I eventually got the code to work.
The download took 16 hours overnight. This morning, I clicked on the desktop icon, to play the game, and repeatedly got a message saying that the server was too busy ... try again later. I eventually got onto the server ... I asked to load the game ... and got a message to say the game would be ready to play in 7 hours & 26 minutes!!! That was one hour ago and I've now got a message to say the server is again too busy, try again later ...!!!
I've no idea what the game is like ... but I'm so fed with the download procedure, that I'm about to do an uninstal and chuck the game disks into the bin ...
Ses Magnifique March 11, 2010 D. Ross (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Big fan of the series and played every game in Total War series. Empire = Total Failure. Napoleon = ses Magnifique. Beautiful involved campaign, correct units, improved AI.
They got it almost right... March 9, 2010 Tacitus (UK) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
The game itself is a great improvement of Empire TW (which was almost a total fail). The map size has been cropped, making it more realistic for players who just want to focus on Napoleonic wars and European affairs. Line infrantry is still the backbone of your army but more detail has been given to model outlook, thus pulling away from Empire TW generic line inrantry model for all nations. Turn cycle spins around months, since the game needs to cover 10 years in the same time it took it to cover 100 years in Empire. Generals are more historically detailed with names and characteristics to suit the era. You also get an option of looting conquered towns unlike in Empire, and filling up your treasury. You get the choice of playing as the French or as the four nations of the coalition which are Britiain, Austria, Prussia and Russia. My main problem with the game is that it runs really slow even though my machine meets the "recomended system requirements" set out on the box. In my humble opinion no recent TW game has managed to match interesting and imersing gameplay that was Rome TW, which I still play to this day.
Napoleon Total war March 8, 2010 Pd Hammond (St Albans UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I again have owned and played all the series and this is by far the best. The irritating bugs and crashes that plagued Empire are all gone. What they have done is produce probably the best PC game I have ever played. But what impresses me more is the level of detail devoted to getting the uniforms right. I just can't fault it, sure they are limits but they have gone to extraordinary lengths to please the Grognard. Even French Republican line infantry wearing a mixture of Bicornes and Tarletons helmets in 1796 Italy is spot on. Well done.
Outstanding March 5, 2010 Mr. A. Hillhouse (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Having played every Total War game from the very start, way back with Shogun. This is truly the most accomplished of the lot. It is a vast improvement on Empire Total War both in terms of the strategic/tactical game play and the A.I. The visuals are utterly stunning and run extremely well on even my relatively dated system. It is emersive and is a real challenge when playing on the toughest settings. It is an absolute must-buy for any fan of this excellent series of strategy games.
