Product Description
Developed at Rebellion by the team responsible for the original 1999 classic, in the all-new Aliens vs. Predator players have the chance to take the role of the three infamous species; the Colonial Marine, the Predator and the Alien. Each of the three species has its very own distinct story-driven single-player campaign mode that interweaves with the campaigns of the other two species. Aliens vs. Predator will also feature unique 3-way online multiplayer, allowing gamers to pit the three species against each other in the ultimate battle for survival and for the right to be crowned the deadliest species. On planet BG-386 a colonist mining group discovers an ancient pyramid containing a dark and horrible secret. Across the stars a race of warriors is alerted to the discovery of their pyramid and a hunting party is dispatched to ensure that it remains sealed at all costs, whilst deep inside the ruined pyramid a malevolent intelligence awakes from centuries of dormancy. The Marines story is an incredible fight against the odds, and the horrors lurking in the dark. Beset on all sides yet armed to the teeth, the Colonial Marine represents humanitys last stand with the firepower to fight back. As the Alien, players will discover what its like to be the most murderous and lethal creature in the universe, with the ability to traverse any surface with awesome agility in order to get close enough to unleash its deadly teeth and claws. A master of the hunt, the Predator grants the player a suite of exotic weaponry and equipment with which to stalk its unknowing prey. Earn the greatest honour by ambushing prey up-close and butchering them for a gory trophy kill.

Modern Warfare 2 : Aliens March 8, 2010 Christopher Burns (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Could be worse and could be better. The game plays out as as a story from three different perspectives (i.e. the Marine, Predator & Alien all have a different part of the story to tell) - although it does seem a little odd in places, as if there was more but it's been cut out.
The game engine itself is pretty impressive, but a little buggy. If you have a high-end system, it's likely to suffer from a stuttering bug where occasionally, it will simply hang and not do anything for 10 seconds or so. This gets pretty damn annoying, and the developers, Rebellion, claim it's related to users choosing too high a texture setting for their video card. This is nonsense; not only do I have 896mb of dedicated video RAM (x2 in an SLI setup), but changing to "high" down from "very high" didn't cure the stuttering. It also didn't change the visuals very much either, but that's another issue.
The story for each race is fairly short; the Marine probably gets the most out of it all, followed by the Predator & Alien, and in total, there's maybe 12-15 hours of gameplay if you take your time -about average, but nowhere near Fallout3 or STALKER levels of gameplay. Each race also plays quite differently due to their differing abilities. The Alien is fast but surprisingly fragile - you must be stealthy at all times; the Marine relies on ranged weapons while the Predator & Alien mostly need to get in close, and so on. All in all, it's an interesting mix and the differences in the storyline are played out quite well. There's also a decent selection of multiplayer modes for all species and a wave-after-wave "survival" mode for the Marine. It's also a gratifyingly tough game if you play on "hard" or better - running headlong into the action will get you killed very quickly here.
Without the stuttering bug I encountered, I'd be highly pleased with it in all, but the bug, and the lame excuse for the bug, is very annoying. For the money, though, there's a decent amount of game in here.
Nice! March 7, 2010 M. Bischof Since its antecessor "AvP2" I've fascinated about the atmosphere in this game. Therefore I had high expectations of this new release. And they mostly have been fulfilled.
The graphic is fantastic - if you call a powerful PC your own - and also the ambient sound and music brings you into the action.
Playing as a Predator...is power! You hunt them down, sneaking cloaked on trees to trap and kill them for the honour of your clan.
Playing as an Alien...is pure adrenaline! You are controlled by the instincts of a beast. Crawling on walls and ceilings with only one goal: slaughter them all!
Playing an USMC...well, is panic! You feel watched all the time. You expect the enemy around every corner. Corner? Damn, what is above me? NOOOO, NOT MEEEEE! *argh* To be honest, playing a Marine is VERY scary because you feel all the time more to be the bait then the hunter.
All in all a worthy successor of AvP2.
The bad:
One word: Steam! Why do I have to install the game from 2 DVDs and still have to download gigabytes(!) from Steam to finish the install? First I thought the install was stuck because my DVD drive did not read anymore. But then I saw that there was still a progress and that my router downloaded tons of data. After about 1.30 hours and several gigabytes of downloaded data later the install was finished! Hello? Kidding? This is absolutely unacceptable! The longest install ever encountered in my PC history. Furthermore I was not able to change the install folder of the game itself. So assure yourself having enough free space left on drive c:.
The good thing is that Steam works fine so far and I don't need the DVDs in my drive to play.
Fun game with lots of potential, released before it was ready though March 5, 2010 Mr. S. Knott Got this game after keeping an eye on trailers and playing the demo a lot with some friends, and for the price I think it was well worth it.
The single player campaign is quite challenging on the harder settings and introduces you to the new melee system well (more on that later). Overall the settings are very atmospheric with a lot of dark and detailed areas (though not so much that you are annoyed by it), the sound is well done and the trophy/stealth kill animations are awesome. Running DX11 on my HD5850 and with the settings cranked up the game looks very good, there are games out there that are more graphically pleasing but they also have a tendency to run with poor FPS on the highest settings, this doesn't. Main complaint is that the Alien campaign is too short and there are a fair few holes in the storyline.
The new melee mode with a rock/paper/scissors style is very innovative and overall it works well. It takes a while to get used to as you have to watch your opponent closely to anticipate his incoming move but is much more tactical than "get close and spam mouse 1" which melee often ends up being.
MP is great fun but I get that feeling that this game was released far too early and again is suffering from consolification. There are a few (some major) bugs and the trophy/stealth kill chains get a little ridiculous. The initial lack of dedicated servers and some "problems" with steam and steam cloud regarding settings and rankings also hurt a lot at the start. Now there are beta dedicated servers for non-ranked matches the MP is a lot more fun to play, especially with friends, and whoever thought of infestation mode is a genius.
A lot of these problems can be fixed with relatively small changes through patching so it will be interesting to see how much support Sega give Rebellion to fix these issues. Once dedicated servers are out fully and a few other bugs are fixed through patches this will be a great game. 5/5 for fun, 4/5 overall due to the bugs and poor initial MP support.
Very limited environment and still feels console like March 3, 2010 Andrew Powell (UK) Many of these console ports as they seem to be, are just poor compared to pc specific game.
This game is no different, It may be an 18 but the console type prompts to click and things like the predator jumping just feel very limited, because it is!!!. You have to stand in just the right place to make a super jump. it would have been much better if you would just anywhere, if you didn't make it, well that's life.
- It does feel very limited and confined in what a character can do.
- Graphics are nothing special.
- Heavily scripted, some stages involve a constant spawning of aliens until you get out or complete and objective. I for one hate spawning.
On the plus side the Marine's motion sensor is great and does add to the atmosphere. Aliens jump all over the wall and like to hang from ceilings.
Brilliantly atmospheric but fundamentally flawed March 1, 2010 J. Morris (London) Firstly, I would like to say that I am a big fan of the 'AvP' series and eagerly awaited the release of this instalment. The game is divided into three, playing as the Alien, Marine and of course, Predator.
Rebellion, the team responsible for the last PC outing, have done a fantastic job of staying canon; with the sounds, locales and weapons all intact and recognisable. This instalment does not disappoint, it is one of the most atmospheric games I have ever played, topping some of the greats (Dead Space, Bioshock etc), there is nothing quite like the heightened fear you feel listening to the blinking sounds of a damaged light fixture and the shadows it casts as something moves in the gloom. I could sing the praises of the atmosphere and level design and graphic capability (if a little resource-hungry) all day, however I would like to alert people to the potential things that will make you dislike this game and hopefully save you some cash!
The Predator is extremely well animated, the 'Focus Jump' mechanic makes moving around the level very easy and after a little while you can become extremely proficient at getting into prime spots undetected, the weapons are good, however some of the favourites from the last game are missing, most noticeably the spear gun. The disc, whilst present in a form, is a mere shadow of it's former self. The auto-return feature is a bit ridiculous as previously you had to expend power to magnetically recall it and this made the user think about the end placement a little more, rather than throwing it regardless like a game of Frisbee. The Combi-Stick however is a welcome addition, which is extremely effective, again, the auto-return is ridiculously quick but the net result is that it replaces the need for the spear-gun.
The Alien is very much unchanged - Run up walls, over the ceiling, drop down, bite peoples head's off, repeating as necessary. The claws and the tail make up the light and heavy attacks respectively. It's main strength is speed and stealth making it an interesting character to play, however it gets very tedious as there is only so many objectives you can be given and lot of them are just repeated ad infinitum.
Finally, the Marine is....just awful. I want to enjoy the marine as it is the closest thing to making this a legitamate FPS, however there are some fundamentally flawed mechanics. Primarily the thing that infuriates me the most is the run function. I figured a colonial marine would be quite fit, however the protagonist in this case runs about as far as an asthmatic, chain-smoking desk-worker with a club foot before stopping dead, gasping for breath. In an environment where your primary enemy is a very fast running creature this is just insanity, as a result the Marine 'feels' very heavy. The weapons are no saving grace, the ammo is far too sporadic meaning panic induced spraying is out the window (bearing in mind you can't run either!) and anything with a bit of power to it either spews ammo at an unfeasible rate (we're looking at you flamethrower) or means that you will be showered in molecular acid and die instantly if you land a hit(shotgun).
All in all, this is an excellent game, but it's not the saviour of the oft-sneered at AvP universe. The game will often take your breath away in awe as the hairs stand up on your neck but many-a-time you will be left very very frustrated that you have been killed and have to do it all again from the checkpoint (Oh yes, it's a checkpoint based save system)
