Not very good.... March 12, 2010 R. Green 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have spent about 6 hours on this game since it arrived and all i have done is walk along linear pathways going through the same battles against the same enemies. its dark graphics dont do it any favours and the cutscenes go on and on... eventually the characters start to annoy you unless you are 12 years old. I played FF7 years ago and this storyline is no match for that game, I cant recommend this game unless you are a die hard RPG fan with a lot of patience.
FFXIII: Just Like Marmite, You'll Either Love It, Or Hate It March 12, 2010 Mr. C. P. Allen 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
I have been a fan of Final Fantasy since number 10. I loved the story, characters, and fun battle system. Then 12 came along...
I was never so bored in all my life. I also never liked Oblivion either for the same reason. Sure, there was vast open lands to explore, but often to no practical end. The licence board was also a messy, complicated affair. You'd find or buy a random piece of equipment, and not know where the node on the board was to enable its use. The characters also had little likeability (with the possible exception of Balthier), and the story was a political snore fest. I also didn't care for the MMO inspired battle system.
Then with baited breath, I awaited number 13. And I wasn't disappointed.
FF 13 reminded me of why I loved FF 10: the story was enjoyable, the characters were likeable (except the whingey Hope), and the battle system is the most enjoyable of the series by far.
Pros:
The environmental graphics and character models are absolutely stunning. And even with the absence of Nobuo Uematsu, the music is really good as well. Masashi Hamauzu (hope I spelt that correctly lol) has done a brilliant job. And as stated above, the story, characters and battle system are top-notch.
Cons:
No game is perfect, and nothing divides people more than the style of an RPG. As it goes, FF 13 is linear for the early part of the game. The battle party members are pre-chosen, and the roles they have access to are limited. There are also caps placed upon how much you can enhance your abilities, and is lifted when the next chapter begins. This is I assume, to stop you getting so strong, that the bosses etc, don't feel too easy. For example: In Pokemon, you could theoretically get strong enough to beat the Elite 4 on the game's first route. It'd take weeks, but its possible.
After about 25 hours or so, the game takes off your training wheels, and lets you have the freedom that some would argue should've been there from the beginning. This was no doubt to keep from intimidating newbies too much (I assume).
The 'My Hands' song some would argue doesn't fit the theme very well. Its an okay song, but the original japanese one would've been better in my opinion. This is no doubt because most westerners think 'J-Pop' (Japanese Pop Music) is a fizzy drink. And once again, Square have tried to be western friendly a bit too much.
Conclusion:
FF 13 is not for everyone. If you liked FF 10 as much as I did, then you won't be disappointed. If however, you liked 12 and disliked 10, then this will probably make you feel too constrained, and go back to playing Oblivion one more time.

Okay, first off, if you are a long term fan of the final fantasy series then it still feels like an ff game to the core. The combat system has been made cooler but it is very simular to the pre ffxii systems (where you don't walk around) added the fact that they have super cool battle animations and the "paradigms" tactical element of the fighting.
The story, once again is deep and the characters are, on the whole, likeable.
Graphically the game is on par with, if not better than uncharted 2. The attention to detail is crazy. At one point you get a close up of sazh's beard and you can see every hair. This shows you they really have been trying to get every detail perfect. And that is what this game is- perfect.
For anyone who thinks the game is too linear at the start all i can say is: aren't all ff games linear for the most part. I see no difference here. I guess these people have been playing too much dragon age, fallout 3, mass effect etc and forgot what ff was all about.
Anyway can't recommend this game enough. If you like ff games then don't even think about it, just get it. Any newcomers wondering what it's like? All i can say is it is only for people who are willing to spend lots of time playing games.
That's about all i have to say about it

One of the best March 12, 2010 Mr. R. Steele 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
I have been looking forward to this game's release for years now, and on Wednesday, after work, I finally sat down to play it.
Now as a Final Fantasy fan, I must confess, I was a little suspicious of the new combat system and huge amounts of cut scenes. For me Final Fantasy has always been about exploration, building up your party's abilities, discovering secret locations, talking to random town's inhabitants and using your brain to defeat your opponent. However, FF13 is a slight departure from the usual, which is not a bad thing.
Final Fantasy started to get tedious over the years. The characters felt strained, the plot lines became somewhat lazy and combat started to change too much. Final Fantasy 7 is my all time favourite. It ticks all of the above boxes and more. This formula then changed and mutated over the years. Final Fantasy 10 was the next excellent installment, to then be let down by Final Fantasy 12. Remember this is just my opinion, but to me battles in these worlds are best left to turn based systems, giving me the time to think and execute my battle plan.
I have now played Final Fantasy 13 for a good 12 hours now, and after a slow start, I am now completely hooked. The story is immersive and heartbreaking, with characters which you actually care about. Hope and Lightening take a little bit of time to warm too, Hope more so than anyone else. His moaning becomes too much, and you wish he would either shut up or grow a set.
The battle system, so far, has worked like a dream. I have found myself using Paradigm shifts without thinking now, and chaining attacks like a pro. It does seem overly complicated I think in the beginning but becomes very clear and simple. The battles look amazing, which sometimes leads to my character being KO'd due to staring too much at the sheer wonder on display.
Without giving anything away, I feel it is hard to write anymore, as this is a game that must be experienced. Please do give it a chance, as it may be a shift from the usual Final Fantasy exploration, but it makes up for it in so many ways. I promise with some time and effort you will love this gem of a game.
