Love my camera September 8, 2010 Debbie Stein (Philadelphia, PA USA) I've had it for a few months now and I have to say that I love my new camera. It takes super pictures, and very good quality too. My husband is a photographer and we go out together to take pictures. I can always capture something really far away with the auto setting, before he's even begun to get ready. It has just what I need. I love the big screen on the back that I can actually see! I love the auto setting, that gives me great pictures without any fuss. I'm begining to learn the other features, using the book and practicing. It's going to take time, because I'm not used to manual settings, but it's fun to learn. My previous camera was a pocket digital, which took pretty good pictures...I do miss the size of it, fitting right in my pocket or purse, but it was limited as to what it could do. This has a 26X zoom that my husband is jealous of. So far so good. It was a great purchase for me.
Nikon Coolpix 100 September 8, 2010 Robert L. Gibson (Illinois) Bought the camera to use on vacation and was very impressed with its ease of use. Quality you would explect in a Nikon. Light and easy to carry. Zoom is great and very handy to have.
one September 7, 2010 Charles G. Detwiler, Jr. Very pleased with the camera as a whole: focusing system, picture definition, ergonomics, menue system, flash system, quality of pictures, telescopic system. i rate the camera as excellent.
This is one HOT point and shoot camera! September 4, 2010 William Schlake (Naperville, IL United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I tend to read lots of reviews before buying any relatively expensive item. I thought with all the high praise here and rave reviews elsewhere that was a bit over the top. I was wrong. High praise is deserved for this camera, its that good! Can you do better? Sure, if you pay more, lots more. I rarely say it, but this item might not be priced high enough scaring away potential buyers thinking that Nikon cut corners, they didn't. Lots of others did extensive reviews on common features, so I'll focus on a few other things. First, if you buy, I implore you to READ THE MANUAL even if you don't normally read manuals. Its 200 pages and well written, packed with easy to understand how-to. If you skip doing that you'll miss many features you may not otherwise stumble on by accident if ever.
If you're in the market for a HD video camera, stop. This Nikon might be all you need plus you get great digital photographs. It shoots videos in two modes. Lower resolution, and full 1920x1080 HD. The camera comes with software called ViewNX which makes it very easy to transfer both photos and videos to your computer for further processing. You can also do slideshows just with the camera or step through the images and videos. A nice notation feature allows you to make up to 20 second 'audio notes' for images that have a musical note sign (most formats do). You can play the notes you recorded back while the file is still in the camera by just depressing one button. Don't like what you said, delete and try again. This feature carries over when yoy transfer files to a computer creating a wav file with the same file name as the image. Cool!
Some reviews suggest the photos aren'ts as sharp as other 10 MPX cameras. Well, that's subjective. Really depends on your settings. If you mainly want to print out 8X10 or smaller the sharpness is more than enough except for the real diehard crowd. Another nice feature is when you're reviewing the shots you made there's a option to display a Histogram. and overly "hot" spots in the image will blink, in the thumbnail as a warning.
If you have a HD TV that has HDMI input, get a HDMI to USB mini c cable. Not a absolute must, but the quality gets raised to the wow factor for slide shows and HD video playback.
A few other goodies that deserve mention. The sports continuous mode is GREAT if you're into sports, shooting your kids, etc.. It takes a series of stills in rapid sequence, you just push the shutter once and sit back. The result is slow to extra slow motion when played back depending on settings. Hint: if you're into video editing like I am and have decent software, this is a real boon in that you can really expand on this feature. Then there's subject tracking mode. You pick a "target" the camera "locks on" and keeps moving objects focused. Nice!
AF area mode is great for people that aren't that great taking pictures. It can automatically detect and focus on a face. Unlike so many cameras that will only focus on the center of the frame you can manually focus anywhere in the frame. Has smile and blink detection too.
There are a few minor cons. The camera is too big to put in your pocket, a purse for the ladies, sure. It doesn't come with a case, again not a big deal. Two slightly annoying things are for this price range you'd think they would throw in a memory card, no. Still it has ample internal memory. The one real disapointment is it takes a good 3.5 hours to charge the battery. Worse to do it, the battery remains in the camera and you need to use the supplied USB cable. That gets old fast.
LCD didn't work and shipping was late September 2, 2010 Mark J. Bradeen 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had a bad experience purchasing my Nikon Coolpix P100. I paid extra $26 for the two day delivery so I would have camera for my kids first day of school. Amazon failed me. They took three days for delivery, so I had to take photos with my blackberry. When I did received the camera today the LCD monitor only displays a bright white screen. The view finder works fine, but when you switch back to LCD mode it shows the white screen again. Poor quality from Nikon and poor service from Amazon. I'm returning the camera.
Update 9-4-10, Amazon said they would send me a new camera with one day shipping on Wednesday night, so I would have it on Friday. Now today, Saturday, the estimated deliver date is Tuesday, 9/7/10. The obviously didn't really pay for overnight delivery like they said they did, so now I have my blackberry for my Labor Day weekend pictures.
