Product Description
The Pentax Optio W80's waterproof design withstands depths of up to 16 feet (5 meters) to protect from rain and spills, as well as allowing full underwater photos and video for up to two hours. On dry land, the rugged, shockproof design protects against drops of up to 3.3 feet to protect the camera from hard use and occasional spills. Also featuring 12.1 megapixels, a 5x internal optical zoom (equivalent to 28-140mm), a slim one-inch body, and a wide angle 28mm lens, the Optio W80 offers an expanded perspective that is ideal for landscape, group and more confined shots. With a Pentax-developed imaging engine and a high-performance Pentax zoom lens, the Optio W80 delivers brilliant, high-quality images with well-defined details. A Super Protect (SP) coating applied to the mineral crystal cover of the internal zoom lens helps repel water, grime and finger marks.

2 out of 5 stars Save a little more and buy a better camera. Not worth it!   March 11, 2010
Justin Beausoleil (Trinidad & Tobago)
This camera takes horrible photos and videos in low light / indoor conditions. Very grainy and blurry. Don't be fooled by the megapixel amount. The image quality is terrible. Even outside in broad daylight you sometimes get big blue streaks or discoloration near the corners on some photos. Save your money and buy something better.

5 out of 5 stars Great sport camera, good for parents   March 9, 2010

Understand that this is a sub-$200 camera made for durability.
A lot of cameras take better pictures. A lot of cameras are more expensive, more fragile, and bigger.

With that understanding, this is a durable, light, small, good camera.
It excels outdoors in sunshine, and inside it does well if you take care to set up your shots well.
The darker it gets, the more of a gamble on the shot turning out; some still do pretty good. Not mural quality; but definitely blog-worthy. Good enough for a scrapbook usually.
I bought the W80 to replace my W20 after 4 years. The W20 died of a hard drop on a tile floor; so the shock resistance mattered to me.
I haven't done scientific testing; but the photo quality seems no better and no worse; just more megapixels, compared to my W20.
The video is definitely much better.
Overall I love this camera. I have no fear of my toddler using it to take pictures or look at pictures I've taken, or just to hold it to sooth a tantrum. Whatever, the camera can survive.
We go to the beach, the park, the sand box, the pool, the snow storm, the rain, hiking, camping, the bath tub, and the lake.
The camera rides in my purse, in my pocket, or in my stroller.
I've taken roughly 500 pictures and several videos, and I'm very happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than the Reviews   March 7, 2010

I really struggled with my purchase of this camera because I needed it for a specific purpose. All the reviews for low light imaging were bad. But I needed a camera with the ability to take shots at a specified time interval (a great, rare feature) and to do so in low light.

First, the interval feature is worth the price of the camera. I can have the camera take a shot every minute or 5 minutes or whatever I set and catch 1,000 images. When I have speaking engagements or teach a day class, I can set up the camera in a corner and let it shoot every minute. At the end of the day, I can have 300 or 500 images or more to review. I always get some good ones. And, if you want to do time lapse, you can get really cool stuff with this camera.

But, if I'm giving a lecture, I can't have a flash going off every minute. So I set the ISO at 400 and hope for the best.

Bottom line? Great shots, even in low light. You just have to get the settings, of which there are hundreds possible, right!

Battery life? Look, it's a waterproof camera and it fits in the palm of your hand. Yes, if it took 4 AAs it could last longer. But the battery is great for such a small battery. It really is. If you know about this stuff, I have 15 digital cameras, you'll know this is great camera for the price. Get a spare battery or two and an external charger. Then go make some cool time lapse movies!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed   March 6, 2010

The W80 has a lot of nice features and one of the most attractive designs of the waterproof cameras, but I was hugely disappointed by the image quality. Testing it aside the Fuji FinePix ZW33 (a substantially cheaper waterproof point and shoot) and the Olympus Tough 6000, it was the worst. I was surprised because dpreview liked the W80 better, but there is so much noise in the images that it just can't compete.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Camera Ever!!!!   March 2, 2010

Wow, this is the worst digital camera I have ever seen. It may work underwater, but the pictures it takes are similar to digital cameras in the Mid 90's. It takes more than high Megapixels to take a good image. This is an absolute piece of junk.
